Cymoedd De Cymru (South Wales Valleys) are a number of industrialised valleys in South Wales. Commonly referred to locally as “the Valleys”, they stretch from eastern Carmarthenshire in the west to western Monmouthshire in the east and from the Heads of the Valleys road in the north to the lower-lying, pastoral country of the Vale of Glamorgan. The coal-mining communities of the area have suffered industrial collapse, some of the remains of this huge industry which was once a world leader including coal, iron and steel can be seen in these images alongside tourist attractions and present steel production facilities at Port Talbot under pressure from the recent dumping of Chinese steel in the world market.
