The geology of the west of the USA is incredibly diverse. Starting at the Rockies you can pass the Great Sand Dunes, Monument Valley, The Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Yosemite, Joshua Tree and of course Big Sur before ending in either LA or San Francisco: it is one of the world’s greatest road trips. Among these landscapes and cities are some of the finest Modernist buildings: The Salk Institute, Kimbell Museum, Marin County Civic Centre, Sea Ranch, Stahl House, Barnsdall House and Taliesin West. The experience of driving through these landscapes, the time required and the opening up to the scale of American space and architecture is exhilarating.
